Celebrate the start of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month through food and art! Arnold Chang-professor of Chinese painting and painter of traditional Chinese style landscapes-will be discussing the role of traditional Asian culture in modern American society through his experiences as an Asian American. Come hear more about our upcoming events in April!

Movie Series: Himalaya
Discussion facilitated by Prof. Harlan

This movie is set in Dolpa which is in the Himalayan region of Nepal. The settlements of people who live here are considered the highest settlements of human beings in the world! It is based on a true story of these people who for hundreds of years have crossed the Himalaya in order to exchange the salt of Tibet for the Nepalese grain. The people there are called the Dolpopa and they wouldn't be able to survive on their land, without this trade. Come see this fascinating film, set in one of the most remote regions of the earth.

"Asian Stereotypes & Public Policy"

Steve Owyang will be talking about the formation of stereotypes of Asian Americans and how they are changing today. These stereotypes are deeply related to the area of racial and ethnic classifications and have significant consequences on public policy.

Movie Series: M Butterfly

M Butterfly, based on the play by David Henry Hwang, is a story of passion and deception. Jeremy Irons plays Rene Gallimard, a French diplomat in China during the 1960s, who falls in love with a Beijing Opera singer, Song Liling, not realizing that the singer is a man as well as a spy for the Communist government. Gallimard is so infatuated with the idea of the Asian woman, that he projects his views onto Song and in doing so, deceives himself. Discussion following with student panel.

"The Real Reality"
Keynote Speaker: Ivana Ma

As seen on the hit reality show, The Apprentice, Ivana has captivated audiences with her witty and often colorful commentary. CCASA is proud to present Ivana Ma as this year's APA month Keynote speaker.

Ivana will be speaking about the representation of Asians and Asian Americans in popular media, including the world of 'Reality TV'. Incorporating her experience as a TV celebrity, Ivana will address what she calls "The Real Reality", as well as the economics of stereotyping, and the future of Asians in the media.

Movie Series: Memories of Murder

Based on a true story in the 1980s, Korean police begin a search for the first serial killer the country has seen. The police face many difficulties in finding the murderer, but as the investigation progresses, more is understood about the identity of the perpetrator.

Monday, April 25

Founder of Asian Man Records, and performing musician
Speaker: Mike Park
Ernst, 4:30 pm

Mike will be performing with his guitar and singing. He will be promoting his mission of positive change through music. An open forum regarding his music and non-profit projects will follow the performance. Mike Park is the founder of Asian Man Records, which is the label of bands such as Alkaline Trio and the Lawrence Arms.

He is the President of the PLEA FOR PEACE Foundation which promotes peace through the power of music, raising over $100,000 for various charities. In September, he will be on a bike tour along the west coast with other musicians to raise funding for a teen center. He is currently doing a Living Room Tour playing his music at different cities in people's living rooms.

Movie Series: In the Mood For Love

Hong Kong, 1962: A man and woman form an intimate bond when they discover that both of their spouses are having an affair. Winner of numerous awards, including Best Actor at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival. Discussion following with Sarah Queen, professor of Chinese history.
